Rhona Scoville: Renaissance Woman of the Library
If the Friends of the Library were an orchestra, Rhona Scoville would be the one who can play every instrument—and somehow also wrote the program notes, arranged the flowers in the lobby, and remembered to bring snacks for intermission.
A former teacher with the gift of making commas behave and semicolons surrender, Rhona wields her red pen (metaphorically speaking) in service of our press releases and event articles. When she writes about our upcoming author talk or book sale, people actually read it. Then they show up. This is not a coincidence.
But Rhona's talents don't stop at the keyboard. She's the fearless leader of our community book club, where she performs the delicate balance of encouraging lively discussion while preventing the group from dissolving into chaos over whether the ending was brilliant or baffling. She keeps us on schedule, supplies thought-provoking questions, and finds thoughtful and well-rounded book selections—a feat of organizational prowess that deserves its own Dewey Decimal classification. Rhona guides lively discussions with thoughtful questions, well-timed schedules, and book selections that keep members eagerly turning pages and coming back for more.
When she's not conjugating verbs or moderating literary debates, you'll find Rhona outside with dirt under her fingernails, transforming our library grounds into something out of Better Homes and Gardens. Thanks to her green thumb and partnership with the local gardening club, our visitors can now enjoy their reading surrounded by blossoms instead of weeds. Thanks to Rhona, the library nourishes both readers and roses—and we’re all better for it.
In short, Rhona doesn't just contribute to the Friends of the Library—she is the friend everyone wishes they had: talented, organized, generous with her time, and probably growing amazing tomatoes.
Sharon Murphy: The Quiet Dynamo
If you've ever wondered how one person can ace a backhand volley, lead a spirited debate about the latest book club pick, and keep our membership records in perfect order—all seemingly without breaking a sweat—you haven't met Sharon Murphy.
As our membership chair, Sharon approaches her duties with the same precision she brings to the tennis court. While others might see a daunting spreadsheet, Sharon sees a perfectly organized rally waiting to happen. New members don't just get welcomed; they get the Sharon Murphy treatment: swift, thorough, and executed with a quiet efficiency that leaves the rest of us wondering if she's discovered extra hours in the day that we've somehow missed.
In meetings, Sharon might seem like she's sitting back, content to let the chatter flow around her. Don't be fooled. Behind that calm exterior, her mind is working like a championship match—analyzing angles, anticipating complications, and calculating the winning shot. Just when a discussion threatens to spiral into its third hour, Sharon will offer a solution so elegant and obvious that we all wonder why we didn't think of it twenty minutes ago.
When Sharon says, "I'll take care of it," the rest of us can actually relax. It's not just that the task will get done—it's that it will be done spectacularly, probably before we've even had our morning coffee.
Bonnie Sprinkle: A Force of Nature (With Streamers)
If the Friends of the Library were a cake, Bonnie Sprinkle would be the frosting, the sprinkles, and the candles all rolled into one. She'd also be the one who baked it, decorated the table it sits on, and convinced three local businesses to donate matching funds for the ingredients.
Bonnie doesn't just believe in right and wrong—she's ready to defend the distinction at a moment's notice, especially when it comes to the children of our community. Suggest cutting the library's story hour budget in her presence at your own peril. She'll have you reconsidering your priorities before you can say "Dewey Decimal System."
When Bonnie enters a room for a Friends of the Library meeting, you know it. There are balloons. There are themed napkins. There is somehow a centerpiece that perfectly captures the spirit of our current fundraising campaign. She has an uncanny ability to make a folding table in a meeting room feel like you've been invited to a beloved aunt's dinner party.
Her energy is legendary. While the rest of us are consulting our calendars and hemming and hawing about whether we can squeeze in one more task, Bonnie has already assigned tasks, gathered resources, and begun her rounds through town with a smile and a pitch that could charm donations from a stone. She puts in long hours without complaint, fueled by what can only be described as pure dedication mixed with strategic applications of candy and stickers!
Thanks to Bonnie, our library events are well-advertised, well-funded, and well-decorated. And all children who walk through those library doors have a fierce champion who believes in their right to books, programs, and possibilities.
Meet Our Resident Creative Wizard
If Martha Stewart and a cheerful fairy godmother had a lovechild who devoted herself to the local library, that would be our own Anita Dolpp. Every month, library patrons are greeted by her latest bulletin board masterpiece - somehow she transforms construction paper, glitter, and sheer imagination into eye-catching displays that make even the book club selections look exciting.
With her signature barrettes keeping her blonde hair perfectly in place, she's a whirlwind of creative energy. Need a wooden ornament for the library's Christmas tree? She's already carved several. Looking for something quirky to brighten up the children’s section? Give her twenty minutes, a jigsaw, and some paint. Our flea market table? Practically a gallery showcase thanks to her handcrafted treasures.
She's proof that age is just a number and that "retirement" is really just code for "time to make everything beautiful, one craft project at a time." The library is her canvas, and we're all grateful to be living in her colorful, glitter-dusted world.
Gidget: Small in Stature, Giant in Heart
Sara Guice has been "Gidget" for as long as anyone in town can remember—a nickname that perfectly captures the paradox of a petite frame packed with boundless energy and devotion. At 80 years young, she's spent every single one of those years right here in our community, weaving herself into the fabric of local life as surely as she weaves her quilts.
Ask anyone at the Friends of the Library, and they'll tell you: if there's a market table to staff, Gidget will be there. Blazing sun? She's there with her cold drink. Bitter cold? She's bundled up and smiling. Howling wind threatening to scatter our bookmarks across three counties? Gidget's already got the tablecloth anchored down and is cheerfully greeting passersby. Her dedication isn't measured in fair-weather hours but in all-weather commitment.
But it's in the quiet hours at home where Gidget's true gift shines. Each year, she spends countless hours bent over her quilting fabric, stitching together vibrant patches of cloth into works of art. These aren't just quilts—they're love letters to our community's children, each one raffled off to fund summer reading programs that keep young minds growing when school's out.
Eight decades in one place means Gidget knows everybody, and better yet, everybody knows her. More importantly, everybody loves her. Because when you've spent a lifetime showing up—for the library, for the children, for the neighbors you've known since they were knee-high—you become more than a community member. You become the community's heart.
Susan Jachimiec: From High Seas to High Shelves
Some people find the library. Susan Jachimiec sailed right up to it.
Several years ago, Susan dropped anchor in our community—literally. After circumnavigating the globe with her husband, collecting skills and stories the way some people collect refrigerator magnets, she decided to swap the rolling waves for solid ground. Her floating home became a permanent address, her nautical charts traded for library cards.
But just because Susan came ashore doesn't mean she's slowed down. Those years of navigating by the stars, fixing engines in foreign ports, and probably tying knots most of us couldn't spell have made her the kind of person who can fix anything, organize everything, and show up for absolutely everyone. Need someone to advocate at a city council meeting? Susan's there. Book sale on Saturday morning? Susan arrived Friday to set up.
These days, she's traded her bicycle for a walker, but it might as well have a sail attached for all the ground she covers. Physical challenges are just another kind of headwind to navigate, and Susan's never been one to turn back because of a little weather.
She's become one of the library's most reliable voices—not just showing up, but speaking up. When Susan talks about why libraries matter, you can hear the conviction of someone who's seen the world and knows that knowledge, like the ocean, belongs to everyone.
We're lucky she decided to dock here permanently.
Vicki Crisp: Sharing Skills in Service of the Group
I have a well-known fondness for technology—and an even better knack for making it work for the group. Flyers, brochures, websites—you name it, I’m probably already imagining how to make it sparkle. I usually see the finished product before anyone else does, which means I tend to give projects a cheerful nudge forward. Think of me as the friendly engine that keeps things moving.
My motto is simple: if I say I’ll do something, I do it. Fully. Thoroughly. Usually yesterday, if possible. I love diving in, solving problems, and turning ideas into reality. Collaboration is great, but I also thrive when I can lock the door, crank up the focus, and just get things done.
Stage fright? Not my problem. I can talk to a crowd with ease. Details behind the scenes? Also my sweet spot. I’m endlessly curious—always testing a new tool, exploring a better way, or thinking, “Wait, I can make that better.” Every project is a playground for learning, inventing, and improving.
I may not be the ultimate social host (someone has to stand in the corner and think about the next task, right?), but I’m all in when it comes to helping the group succeed. Staying organized and proactive is my superpower, and honestly, I love being involved, learning, and making a difference. Perfection isn’t the finish line—it’s the starting point for creativity, curiosity, and a little bit of fun along the way.
